The World Environment Day 2017 was celebrated in Uganda on the 5th of June, 2017 under the local theme “CONNECT TO NATURE, APPRECIATE BIODIVERSITY.” The theme established that if we as citizens of Uganda, ventured out into nature, we would fully appreciate her beauty, and acknowledge the dependence we have on the different ecosystem services she provides. The event was celebrated alongside the International Day of Biological Diversity (IDBD), commemorated on May 22nd every year.It was a well-attended event, attracting organizations from civil society, private sector and Government. ECOTRUST participated in the celebrations by showcasing her existing programmes that were in relation to the theme of the day. The Guest of Honor, the President of Uganda; HE Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in his speech emphasized the critical importance of conserving Uganda’s wetlands. Not only do they play a vital role in water filtration, they provide herbal medicine, support rainfall formation and boost the tourism sector due to their richness in biodiversity.
The government of Uganda will put in place more stringent policies to prevent encroachment on river banks, lake shores and mountain tops. He added that there is need to adopt irrigation most especially in areas that are constantly affected by long dry spells. Farming practices such as mulching and contour cultivation should be encouraged in order to boost agricultural production. He ended by encouraging the youth to actively participate in conservation practices so as to secure a future for themselves and generations to come.
A thank you goes to NEMA (National Environment Management Association) for organizing this annual event.
