Strengthening Capacity for HIV Prevention in Protected Areas

In the month of June, 2017; outreaches to offer HIV integrated services to UWA staff in the 2 conservation areas of MECA and MFCA were conducted. 12 outposts in these conservation areas were provided with integrated services, sensitization talks on HIV prevention, testing, care and treatment were held. STI screening, Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC), Maternal and New Born Health (MNH), family planning and Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission (EMTCT) services were also carried out. A total of 170 male and 274 female individuals were sensitized, of which 116 males and 169 females voluntarily underwent HIV testing. Family planning services were offered to 9 women and a total of 7 individuals were registered for VMMC. The activities were also blended with malaria testing and treatment, condom education and distribution and support of BCC agents implementing the stepping stones methodology.

Human Wildlife Conflict Resolution in Promotion of Sustainable Tourism

ECOTRUST is currently working with the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) in the Development of a Human-Wildlife Conflict Resilience Fund (HWC). The project, which was officially launched on Wednesday last week (17th May, 2017) aims to enhance community resilience to losses from wildlife incursions through the development of local and regional compensation schemes that are anchored on a community-driven and financed mechanism. The scheme is one of several complimentary measures for community long term engagement in reducing forest loss and degradation and providing incentive measures for community long term engagement in sustainable natural resource management. The project is targeting communities within the Albertine Rift Eco-region that ranks 1st out of 119 distinct terrestrial eco-regions of continental Africa in terms of endemic species of birds, mammals, reptile and amphibians, and second in terms of globally threatened species.

The One Millionth Ton of CO2 under Trees for Global Benefits

The Trees for Global Benefits Programme has been issued with VER certification representing 133,364tCO2 equivalent in emission reduction. This has resulted from recruiting a total of 832 farmers bringing 646.31 ha of farmland under improved management using the Mixed Native Spp technical specification. This issuance has enabled the project attain a significant milestone, recruiting farmers that will contribute emission reductions equivalent to one million tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Sustainable Forest Management Through Community Led Initiatives

The Budongo landscape is comprised of forests both on public and private land. With no clear boundaries and no defined ownership, these forests have come under threat by the ever-expanding population in the landscape. Forest degradation can be attributed to economic activities within the landscape such as; sugarcane growing, tobacco growing, oil and gas extraction, to mention a few. Wetlands in this region have also come under threat, with reports of wetlands being used as dumping grounds for industrial waste as well as distillation / production of alcohol.
