How Best Can You Address An Environmental Issue within your School Community?

We are in the midst of a global climate crisis, and we want to hear students’ own views on how best to address an environmental issue within their communities!

In line with the theme of this year’s World Environment Day – #OnlyOneEarth – that calls for collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet, ECOTRUST with funding from Standard Chartered Bank Uganda (SCB(U)) is organizing The Climate Change Innovation Challenge 2022 for secondary schools in the Kampala Metropolitan Area.

The challenge is meant to encourage students to use their critical-thinking and research skills to come up with a solution to an environmental issue affecting their community. The students will report on the problem and their proposed solution through an “action plan” and an itemized budget.

Process

  • Students can approach the topic however they wish. They are strongly encouraged to work in teams and include their own personal views, perspectives, and experiences to help bring their thoughts and visions alive.
  • The students report on the problem and their proposed solution through a clear "action plan" and an itemized budget in line with the activities set in the proposal.
  • All proposals are to be written and submitted in English. There is no limit on the number of words for the proposals.
  • Students are encouraged to enrich their proposals with images.
  • Proposals should be submitted with a clear title, the names of the student team members and the school they belong to.
  • Students are also expected to prepare 10-minute PowerPoint presentations to support their proposals.
  • The proposals are to be submitted via email to scbchallenge@ecotrust.or.ug by the 3rd of July 2022 (and no later than 5pm).
  • Ten (10) shortlisted schools will be invited to defend their proposals at the final / official event scheduled for the 8th of July 2022 at Gayaza High School.
  • Each invited team will be given 10 minutes to present their action plans (via PowerPoint) to the panel of judges.
  • The winning ideas will be recognized and awarded at the event.

Selection Criteria

Finalists and potential winners of the Climate Change Innovation Challenge 2022 will be selected from among all eligible entries / proposals reviewed by the panel of qualified judges; based on the following numerical point system;

The Official Event – 8th July 2022

The Climate Change Innovation Challenge Final Event will be held on the 8th of July at Gayaza High School from 8:30 am – 1:00 pm, in observance of the theme of this year’s World Environment Day #OnlyOneEarth – that calls for collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet. The event will emphasize the critical importance of involving the youth in conservation and expound on SCB (U)’s commitment to the Net Zero Agenda.

Ten (10) schools – shortlisted from all eligible proposals submitted for the competition – will be invited to attend this event and defend their proposals in front of the panel of qualified Judges. The top 5 winning schools will each receive USD 1000 courtesy of SCB (U). 

The event will be attended by members of the press, staff of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda (SCB(U)), ECOTRUST, officials from the Ministry of Water & Environment, KCCA and the Ministry of Education & Sports among others.
