Restetuta Rwabayambire, from Bitereko subcounty in Mitooma District, is a leader in the Trees for Global Benefits (TGB) project, starting in 2003. She is not only a farmer but also the LC1 Chairperson of her community and a respected church leader. |
Restetuta’s tree-planting journey began in 2003 when she planted her first trees. Her active role in the community and leadership helped her achieve great success.
One key moment in her journey was when she went to the SACCO to collect her carbon payment. She expected only UGX 50,000, but to her surprise, she found UGX 680,000 in her account. This unexpected money helped her pay school fees for her children, including one who was going to college in another district. Her family was overjoyed and amazed by the amount.
With the money from her trees, Restetuta was able to send her children to school. Some of them earned degrees, including one in Engineering. She also used the money from mature trees to help pay for her younger children’s education.
Restetuta’s passion for tree planting has also helped her community. She encourages her neighbors to plant trees and has hosted many international visitors who came to see the trees on her land.
Restetuta also used some of her earnings to start a poultry business. This shows how the TGB project has not only helped her but also supported the growth of her community.
She continues to plant more trees and has even started a nursery for indigenous trees. Her message to others is: “Do the right thing and keep planting trees for a better future.”
