The carbon payments from his trees have been crucial in funding his children’s education, giving them a better future. The dry branches that fall from the trees also provide a steady supply of firewood for his home. When he started thinning his trees, Paturi was able to build a new house with the proceeds.
Though he’s been offered money for his trees, Paturi is committed to letting them grow fully mature before harvesting. His family supports this decision, knowing the long-term rewards it will bring. He plans to harvest timber in 20 years, confident that ECOTRUST will help him find the right market for it.
Alongside tree planting, Paturi grows millet, groundnuts, and cassava. He’s also ventured into beekeeping and coffee farming, which has further diversified his income. Looking ahead, he hopes to start a goat-raising project between his trees, adding another sustainable element to his farming practices.
Paturi strongly advocates for tree planting, encouraging others to see the many benefits, from education funding to successful beekeeping. As the TGB project celebrates its 20th anniversary, Paturi hopes to be recognized as one of the top pioneer farmers, proud of his journey and the positive impact it’s had on his community.
