On February 2, 2025, Uganda joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Wetlands Day, a global event dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of wetlands in biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods. This year’s celebrations were held at Katerera Playground in Rubirizi District, bringing together government officials and conservation organisations such as Nature Uganda, WWF, UNDP, UWA, NEMA, MWE, and local communities.

The event was graced by Vice President Jessica Alupo, alongside district political leaders and regional representatives, who reiterated the importance of wetland conservation for sustainable development.

The theme for World Wetlands Day 2025, Conserving Wetlands Today for a Secure Tomorrow,” highlighted the critical link between wetland ecosystems and freshwater resources. It underscored the vital role wetlands play in ensuring access to clean and safe water for both communities and natural ecosystems.

ECOTRUST actively participated in the day’s exhibitions, showcasing the efforts of local conservation groups. Notably, the Ndangara and Nyakiyanja Parishes Tutungukye Group (NNTG), a Collaborative Forest Management (CFM) group based in the Kalinzu Central Forest Reserve, exhibited a variety of eco-friendly products, including:

  • Tree seedlings – Promoting reforestation and afforestation efforts

  • Honey – Supporting sustainable beekeeping as an alternative livelihood

  • Energy-saving stoves – Reducing reliance on firewood and promoting cleaner cooking technologies

In addition to the exhibitions, ECOTRUST staff engaged attendees through awareness campaigns, knowledge-sharing sessions, and interactive discussions on wetland conservation. The emphasis was on the importance of community-led conservation efforts, showcasing how local groups can play a crucial role in protecting and restoring wetlands while also benefiting economically from sustainable natural resource use.

World Wetlands Day serves as a reminder of the urgent need to protect and restore wetland ecosystems. As Uganda and the global community work towards a sustainable future, conserving wetlands remains essential for safeguarding water security, preserving biodiversity, and building climate resilience.
