George’s connection to the project deepened after his father’s passing, as he took over a portion of the family forest.
Meet Wilson Turyahikayo, a true pioneer in the Trees for Global Benefits (TGB) Project since its inception in 2003. Long before the concept of carbon payments, Wilson had a passion for growing trees, initially introduced to the idea by John Tagawa, a staff member of the District Forestry Services. Eager to expand his tree-growing endeavors, Wilson enthusiastically joined the TGB project when ECOTRUST entered the scene.
Restetuta Rwabayambire stands as a trailblazing pioneer in the Trees for Global Benefits (TGB) project, a distinction she earned by being the first to raise her hand when ECOTRUST trainers sought those interested in growing trees. Daudi Bangirana, during the project’s nascent stage, held the positions of District Health Inspector and Councillor of Biteereko Subcounty in Bushenyi district. Introduced to the upcoming carbon project, he learned that group participation was encouraged, particularly with an emphasis on women’s involvement. Collaborating with Beatrice Ahimbisibwe, then Chairperson of the Bitereko Subcounty women’s group, they drafted a proposal outlining the group’s engagement in the project.

The Ndangara and Nyakiyanja Parishes Tutungukye group (NNTG), guided by ECOTRUST, has turned a history of conflict into a model of sustainable growth. Through reforestation, beekeeping, and partnerships with organizations like ECOTRUST, the NNTG has not only revitalized the forest but also elevated the standards of living for the Ndangara community.
